Our previous Whirlpool refrigerator died. Exactly two days before Christmas 2017. And, yes, the family was coming to our home that year for four days of holiday. We loved that old Whirlpool—it fit in our “vintage” home, it was quiet, it kept things cold. We chose the Whirlpool WRT311FZD (white) to replace it. Mainly because: Satisfaction with previous Whirlpool products; it fit in the space; and it was available for delivery. Cost did not factor into our decision. Oh how we wish we’d kept the 18-year-old Whirlpool and paid to have it brought back to life instead! The WRT311FZD cooled the turkey, pumpkin pie and whipped cream. But it did it with such a whine, howl and racket that we were startled. We understand that the newer units are more energy-efficient and that is done at the expense of more frequent “running” with a different type of cooling mechanism. But this refrigerator is noisy—so noisy that we are forced to close the bedroom door in our small home so we don’t have to listen to the incessant whine. We contacted the service department; the technician came out, listened, explained that it would run more often than we were used to with our “old” Whirlpool and admitted that it seemed especially loud. He ran some tests on the refrigerator and said the operation was within tolerance. But, he said again, it was quite loud. At this time the noise was a moan and a whine. We recorded it—it sounded like a Halloween ghoul had taken up residence in our kitchen. Perhaps it had. The technician told us that noise is a subjective issue and, since the unit was within functional tolerance, we’d have to “work with” the appliance store’s owner’s wife to get authorization for something to be done. I called twice and received no response. Frankly, the idea that I would have to be the one to push for a replacement seemed like passing the buck to the consumer. By chance, we had a Whirlpool of the same model as our previous one at our office and home in town which worked great. Our “new” Whirlpool in our smaller home had progressed from moans and whines to a high-pitched howl. We began to consider switching out the two Whirlpool refrigerators. Then the Camp Fire hit our town in Paradise (California) and the office and home there burned to the ground. While we lost all of our stuff, one of our greatest sadnesses (seriously!) is having lost the ability to switch out our noisy Whirlpool for the one that worked well, worked quietly and just did its job. We’re actively seeking another refrigerator for our little home (so our sleep isn’t disturbed and we can leave the bedroom door open) but it will NOT be this model and there’s a 98 percent chance it won’t be another Whirlpool. The lack of dealer support and the noise of this refrigerator are not something we want to invite into our lives again. Our advice to you? If you have to buy this unit, be certain to purchase from a dealer who will work with you if it’s too noisy. And don’t get rid of your old refrigerator, just in case.

I wanted just a basic freezer on top fridge, which it is. Seems like it has a tough time keeping temperatures where they should be and I had to put it on the high setting. Runs often and is pretty loud, concerned about the energy efficiency of it. No light in the freezer but I purchased one online for $20 and it works just fine, much better that paying over $300 more for the next size up, slightly larger Whirlpool fridge with a light in the freezer.
